The Art Institute of Houston Culinary Programs

Culinary ProgramsExpect to evolve and become inspired. The Art Institute of Houston is one of The Art Institutes, a system of more than 40 locations throughout North America, providing an important source of design, media arts, fashion and culinary arts professionals.

The Art Institute of Houston educates students in Media Arts & Animation, Baking & Pastry, Culinary Arts, Culinary Management, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Web Design & Interactive Media, Photography, Fashion & Retail Management, and Restaurant & Catering Management. From its founding in 1965 until joining The Art Institutes system of schools in 1978, The Art Institute of Houston was known as the Houston School of Commercial Art. In December 1990, the school moved to its current facility at 1900 Yorktown Street in the Galleria area.

Culinary Programs Offered:

Baking & Pastry
In the Baking & Pastry program, you’ll gain hands-on baking skills. Emphasis is placed on fundamental pastry and bread-baking techniques, in addition to all-purpose baking, desserts, cake decoration, and pastry arts. To complement your culinary techniques, you’ll learn critical thinking and business essentials. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as line cook and pantry cook (garde manger).

Culinary Arts*
In the Culinary Arts program, you’ll have an opportunity to gain practical experience in the kitchen while studying the business of cost control, sanitation and safety, menu and beverage management, nutrition, and kitchen management. You’ll have an opportunity to learn to produce food quickly and in quantity while working with others. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as line cook and pantry cook (garde manger).

In the Culinary Management program, you’ll have an opportunity to focus on communications, training, leadership, management, accounting, marketing, financial management, and employee relations. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as restaurant manager or catering manager in restaurants, hospitals, cruise ships, and banquet facilities.

Restaurant & Catering Management
In the Restaurant & Catering Management program, you’ll gain knowledge that will benefit you as you pursue management positions within the food service industry. Coursework focuses on communications, training, leadership, management, human resources, technology, accounting, marketing, financial management, and customer relations. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as restaurant manager or catering manager in restaurants, hospitals, cruise ships, and banquet facilities.
